‘Highlander - the Series’ takes place in an alternate universe / timeline from the first three ‘Highlander’ movies, although the two share some characters, events, and rules: Connor did not win the Prize in 1985 when he killed the Kurgan; the Gathering has only just begun, and is apparently a long process; and there are still plenty of Immortals left…

Duncan MacLeod is the younger clansman of Connor MacLeod, and is also an Immortal. In the first season, he lives in and runs an antique shop with Tessa Noel, his mortal, live-in lover. When Duncan encounters Richie Ryan, a young thief who attempts to rob the antique shop in the middle of the night, he decides to take the boy under his wing, to become his mentor.

The first season is mainly comprised of episodes in which Duncan comes into conflict with the ‘immortal of the week’, together with interesting glimpses of Duncan’s past as seen through flashbacks, and the debut of beautiful femme fatal Amanda. However, as of the last episode the series undergoes a format change: a secret organisation known as the Watchers is introduced, who know of the immortals and have studied them over the centuries; one of their number, Joe Dawson, befriends Duncan. They discover that a rogue group has splintered off from the Watchers, and, calling themselves the Hunters, seek to exterminate the blight of the immortals. When Tessa is later killed in a random act of senseless violence, her death inspires Duncan to become more involved in mortal affairs; he feels he can no longer ignore the sorry state of the world, but must try to do something to improve it. Meanwhile, Richie, killed in the same shooting as Tessa, also becomes Immortal.

The series becomes quite dark and gritty, and one is never certain who will survive to the end of the episodes. The stories are on the whole well written, and the plot arcs across seasons are particularly well thought out, with some major shocks and surprises along the way, particularly when we meet Methos, the oldest immortal, and also discover the darker side of Duncan’s character.

The show ran for six seasons, and also spawned a series of novels and a spin-off show, ‘Highlander: the Raven’, which featured Amanda. A feature film, ‘Highlander: Endgame’ was released in 2000, which effectively wrapped up the story of Duncan MacLeod. However, in July 2005, Davis Panzer announced plans for three new ‘Highlander’ features over the next two years, starting with ‘Highlander’: The Source’; and that's not all, as 2009 saw the release of ‘Highlander’ audio plays from 'Big Finish Productions', with Adrian Paul reprising his role as the immortal Scottish swordsman.

It seems that Duncan McLeod's adventures are far from over...
